Diagnostics for Phonics Instruction

1. Here is a free download of the Phonics for ESL Diagnostic. It addresses the most basic level of letter/sound relationships: short vowels, single consonants, and common digraphs. This is designed specifically for use with At the River and Other Stories for Adult Emergent Readers, but can be used with other emergent reading materials as well.

2. Check out the BATT (Beginning Alphabetics Tests and Tools) on the English Code Crackers website: http://www.englishcodecrackers.com/beginning-alphabetics-tests-and-tools.html. The BATT is a ten part diagnostic that addresses the following: uppercase and lowercase letters; letter names; writing letters; single consonants and short vowels; consonant blends, digraphs and trigraphs; long vowels including silent e, vowel digraphs, vowel-r and vowel diphthongs. This is also a free download. Thanks to Marn Frank and Kristin Perry for developing and sharing the BATT.

Scaffolded Reading

Download a free handout of the scaffolded reading sequence. This interactive, dynamic sequence of activities provides the repetition and variety that emerging readers need in order to improve their decoding and fluency skills.

Monthly Newsletter for ESL Literacy

Sign up to receive a free monthly newsletter from Shelley Hale Lee. The newsletter offers teaching tips and ideas for ESL literacy and for using At the River with adults or K-12.

Scaffolded Listening and Speaking

Confidence in speaking helps students build literacy skills. Try this activity using any high interest picture. This sequence works well for students who only have a few words in English as well as those who have basic conversational skills.
